Letters & Words

My attraction to the book form was due to its ability to entertain my varied interests in photography, design, and sculpture. Many of the first self-conscious artist books I made started as formal experiments with the physicality of a book: how it delivers information to a reader and how that delivery effects communication. This took the book out of its ordinary space and forced me to consider the ways and means of display as closely as I considered the general topic of a project. Some of the first books I made were alphabet books, and the alphabet continues to be a source of fascination for me, as elemental to the book as it is to reading.
