Hanging Indexes

1999, 36 x 72 in.
one-of-a-kind altered book

A series of bookworks created by cutting the text block of a reference book and 'reading' the individual pages in space, creating physical lines of text flowing from the binding. The first hanging index was created while an artist-in-residence at the Washington Project for the Arts in 1989. They are very popular with librarians.
